The Problem with Online Multiplayer...
Nothing beats the thrill of facing of against your friend who is miles away in your favourite title through the virtual world of online multiplayer...
The online scene is the most popular and largest gaming platform in the world. It rivals, even beats all the gaming tournaments hosted each year like the E3, EVO or Final Round tournaments. But like with all things, it has its drawbacks because nothing is perfect, not even online multiplayer...
Whilst online play brews the competitive spirit we gamers thrive and look for, nothing beats the disgruntled look of your opponent when you hand him or her that Parfait!, that Perfect!, that Flawless Victory!... Whilst playing online is fun, it costs a lot and because it is an internet connection, you are plagued by lag...
The other drawback of online multiplayer is that in general, it kills the storyline in most games as your goal is not to find out what happens but to beat the guy on the other end. Take one of the most popular online games, Call of Duty. I might not be a fan of war games but how many of you CoD fans can tell me the storyline behind the title? None! Because it has it has become a game all about the online...
One example where online multiplayer has killed the storyline of a game is God of War: Ascension. While the online is awesome, it clearly took away from the in depth storyline we have come to expect from the God of War series. This particular instalment was a great disappointment and why? It was the first online God of War game Santa Monica ever made and had less in the storyline department...
So, yes online is awesome. but is it worth it? The online cost and deprival of the storyline all for the pleasure of beating someone miles away... I'll leave you to decide whether to Beat Em' Up online, or do it live and in person....
This has been my take on Online Multiplayer...
