| Sony Morpheus |
Sony unveiled a head-mounted virtual reality display for the PlayStation 4 at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
Codenamed Project Morpheus, it has a 1080p display with a 90-degree field of view that can track head movements.
The headset resembles a pair of ski goggles. Unlike other similar yet bulkier displays, Morpheus looks to be relatively lightweight, which could make a considerable difference in extended gaming sessions.
The Morpheus headset also offers some tantalising possibilities for gamers when paired with Sony's Move controller and is Sony's first head-mounted display for the PlayStation. Being the first console on the block with a VR option, Sony also gain a potentially compelling point of differentiation over their arch rival, Microsoft's Xbox One console.
The Morpheus headset is still a prototype and has a few wrinkles. For a start it attaches to a PS4 via a 4.5 metre cord. This said, the headset can also display its output on a television screen. Sony's President of their Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said Sony has been working on the technology for more than three years.
Sony have yet to reveal the headset's launch date or pricing.
