PS4 may soon play your favorite PS1 and PS2 games in native 1080p

I'd be more impressed with PS3 compatibility

Dying to play classic games like Viewtiful Joe or Tekken 3 on your PS4? Well, you might just be in luck. A recent rumor has indicated that Sony is working on PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility for the PS4 — sidestepping the need for game streaming completely. Even better, a number of “select titles” are supposedly running natively at 1080p.

GTC 2014: Nvidia reveals dual-GPU Titan Z, new Pascal GPU offers colossal memory bandwidth

Colossal memory bandwidth

GTX Pascal

Nvidia’s Jen-Hsun Huang kicked off the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) this week — and first on the list of announcements was a massive new GPU project. According to Nvidia, two of the greatest problems facing modern graphics cards is the memory bandwidth problem between both the CPU and GPU, and the GPU to onboard memory. These issues have made it difficult to incorporate the GPU as a truly equal computational partner — the GPU may have a firehose connection to its own memory banks, but it connects to the rest of the system through a PCI-Express-sized straw. Nvidia wants to solve both problems, and Jen-Hsun believes its new chips (codenamed Pascal) will do so.

NASA has revealed its newest range of next-generation spacesuits, the Z-2. The Z series of spacesuits is a series of prototypes that NASA is working its way through, with the eventual goal of creating a suit that will be used during future space walks, deep space missions, and planetary EVAs (i.e. walking on Mars).

HTC One M8 revealed: Snapdragon 801, Duo Camera, 5-inch screen, aluminum unibody

H...T...C...

HTC One M8
The new HTC One M8 has leaked more times than any flagship phone in recent memory, but HTC still took the stage and announced the device like nothing was out of the ordinary. Even a cursory glance would tell you this is a successor to the original One with its unibody aluminum shell and humongous front-facing speakers. The HTC One certainly has the makings of a flagship phone, but does it have what it takes to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Balkanized gaming: Nvidia GameWorks now a core part of UE4; AMD counters with Mantle integration in CryEngine

A bit of war...

U4 Logo

A pair of announcements from Nvidia and AMD at GDC today drew up the battle lines for 2014 as both companies announced critical new partners for 2014 and beyond. First, Nvidia announced that its proprietary software libraries, bundled under the GameWorks brand name,  are now a core component of Unreal Engine 4. In other words, GameWorks won’t be an added package that developers sign up to use when building games — it’ll be the de facto standard. That’s potentially problematic for anyone who doesn’t own an Nvidia GPU.

Is this the key?

Tethercell beside iPhone app

The thing I love most when writing about tech is the sheer number of crazy yet brilliant ideas I get to see first-hand.

One such example is the Tethercell, announced at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona.

AMD’s Mantle brings 23% performance boost to Thief, TrueAudio impresses

Better Performance...

Thief Logo

Today, AMD is adding Mantle support for a new game, Thief and debuting the first public demo of its TrueAudio technology. We’ve taken both out for a spin to kick the tires and check the performance — so where do things stand? We’ve already covered the basics of Mantle performance in previous stories, so we’re going to focus on a hands-on comparison of two platforms using two midrange GPUS — the R9 270 and the R7 260X. AMD has released a great deal of supplementary information regarding its own performance expectations, however, so we’ll refer to that to flesh out our analysis in several respects.

Microsoft and Google kill off Intel-Asus dual OS tablet effort

They killed it....

TD300

At CES 2014 in January, Intel and Asus demonstrated an unusual new twist on mobile computing: the dual-OS Transformer Book Duet. The Duet was designed to run a full version of Android side-by-side with a full version of Windows, with a hardware button to switch between the two modes. Applications and data were separated between the two operating systems, unless you saved data to a specific shared partition.

Amazon’s game controller emerges: Now where’s the game console itself?

Gamepad without console?

Amazon Gamepad - Front
Thanks to some leaked images from the Brazilian equivalent of the FCC, it appears that Amazon’s long-awaited set-top box/game console is finally coming to market. The leaked images show a gamepad that is strongly reminiscent of the Xbox 360 gamepad, with some additional buttons in the middle, and some media playback buttons on the bottom edge. The buttons in the middle of the controller all but confirm that Amazon’s new game console/media streamer/<insert some other vague class of living room electronics> will run Android, too.

The mystery of flight MH370: How on earth, with all our technology, do we lose a giant plane?

Now this is a mystery in itself.

The fourth day of the MH370 search-and-rescue mission has come to a close, and we’re still no closer to finding the missing plane. The search area has been expanded from 50 nautical miles (57 miles; 93km) to 100 nautical miles. It has also come to light that MH370′s co-pilot, Fariq Abdul Hamid, was extremely unprofessional during a flight in 2011. On a flight from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur, Hamid invited two South African teenagers into the cockpit, where they remained for the entirety of the flight, while he and the pilot smoked cigarettes while flying the plane. Whether this new finding has any bearing on the fate of MH370, we’ll have to wait and see. Read on for previous updates and the original story.

Samsung goes legit, stops cheating on benchmarks with latest Android update

They have decided to go legit. Finally.

Samsung Galaxy S4

Earlier this year, Samsung came under heavy fire for its benchmark shenanigans are dubious practices. The company deliberately built a whitelist of benchmark applications for products like the Note 3 and Galaxy S4. If any of these applications were detected, the CPU would immediately ramp up to 100% of its possible clock, regardless of the impact on power consumption or battery life.

Microsoft has signed off on the final version (the RTM) of Windows 8.1 Update 1. According to one of our internal sources, the new version of Windows 8 is on schedule to be released on April 8, just after Microsoft’s Build conference. You will probably be glad to hear that most of the changes in Windows 8.1 Update 1 are focused on making the OS usable for mouse-and-keyboard users.

Entangled photonic microscope goes beyond the quantum limit

Going further than beyond...

Entanglement

Standard optical microscopes have surrendered their once dominant position at the forefront of scientific research to more advanced tools. As we delve deeper into the microscopic world, photons just don’t provide enough detail when there are technologies like X-ray laser and electron microscopy available.

Why doesn’t the Samsung Gear Fit support the iPhone: Hubris or stupidity?

I do not know also...

As I sat in the audience watching Samsung unveil the Galaxy S5 and three new Gear smartwatches, I had potentially life-changing epiphany: Why don’t these smartwatches support other, non-Samsung smartphones?

A galaxy of Gears: Why is Samsung releasing three non-Android smartwatches?

Now what is this now?

New Samsung Smartwatches

Earlier last week, at Mobile World Congress, Samsung unveiled three new smartwatches: the Gear 2, the Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit. Building off of last year’s Galaxy Gear, these devices are fundamentally designed to cover as many use cases as possible. Samsung is obviously angling to gain an early lead in the smartwatch market by ditching Android, but can it really compete against the likes of Google and Apple?
