Over at the Penny Arcade Report, Microsoft’s Jeff Henshaw officially confirmed that other consoles will work through the Xbox One’s interface. If you want to hook up a PS4 or Wii U to the back of your Xbox One, go nuts! While many of us were concerned that the additional lag introduced through the Xbox One would cause problems for some games, Henshaw denies that this will be an issue. “It is an extremely small lag that the human eye will not be able to perceive,” he says.
While Henshaw was apparently slightly squeamish about discussing the possibility of plugging in a PS4 or Wii U, and understandably so, he makes it quite clear that it should work without a hitch. He even notes that he already plays Xbox 360 games through the Xbox One’s HDMI passthrough, so feel confident in knowing that lag will not be an issue in the vast majority of circumstances.
Even so, day-one patches will be an issue. The Xbox One that is shipping on launch day is effectively unusable without the day-one patch. Engadget interviewed Microsoft’s Albert Penello, and he confirmed that games will not be playable at all until the patch is installed. “Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update,” he says. If the Xbox Live servers get slammed at launch, or your internet drops out, you’re pretty much stuck with a pile of useless silicon and plastic.
As bad as that sounds, Sony is very much in the same boat with the PS4. Until you apply a hefty 300MB patch, your PS4 will be missing a number of core features. As we’ve said before, both of these consoles are coming in extremely hot. Shipping non-functional devices is pretty much the standard these days — companies would rather force an update than delay a launch date. While it’s not the end of the world, this is a perfect example of how modern consoles are actually a tiny bit worse than the consoles of yore.
