At a strategy briefing in Tokyo, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata vows that the company's turnaround plans don't involve mobile. Plus: Mario Kart 8 is coming in May.
Things have been a bit rocky in Mario land. A day after Nintendo announced disappointing earnings, including a 30 percent decline in profits and lower Wii U sales than in 2012, its president, Satoru Iwata, on Wednesday held a strategy briefing in Tokyo to discuss a strategic turnaround.

Novena: A leather-bound open-source hacker laptop that you can build yourself
I want one!
The beautiful laptop that you see before you, called Project Novena, was built from scratch. Because its creators have open-sourced the laptop’s blueprints, you can even build a Novena yourself — if you had a lot of time, money, and technical expertise, anyway.

Intel slams brakes on plans for new chip factory
Intel has put on hold a new chip manufacturing facility at its site in Chandler, Arizona, leaving the new space available for unspecified future technology.
The company said in February 2011 it was investing over $5 billion in the new Fab 42, which was expected to be completed last year. The fab was to begin operations on a process that would allow the chipmaker to create transistors with a minimum feature size of 14 nanometers.

Sony’s new VR headset squares off with the Oculus Rift
Let the battle commence...
The Oculus Rift is still in development kit form, but for a dev kit that aims to offer virtual reality in the living room for a relatively affordable $300 price tag, the device actually delivers. Your less tech savvy friends may not have heard of the Rift yet — and it doesn’t exactly have an impressive catalog of officially supported software — but the buzz surrounding the device is strong and loud. In fact, that buzz is so strong and loud that Sony has taken to developing a Rift competitor of its own.

Tegra K1 64-bit Denver core analysis: Are Nvidia’s x86 efforts hidden within?
Where are the efforts? Show me the efforts...
On January 5th at CES 2014, Nvidia surprised everyone by revealing that its in-house 64-bit ARM core, Project Denver, would arrive this year in the Tegra K1 (Tegra 5/Logan), rather than next year in Tegra 6 (Parker). The Tegra K1 will ship in two flavors: First there’ll be a fairly standard K1 with a quad-core (4+1) Cortex-A15 CPU (just like Tegra 4), but then in the second half of 2014 there’ll be a K1 that features a dual-core 64-bit ARMv8 Denver CPU. Except the CPU, and larger caches on the 64-bit version, both variants of the K1 SoC seem to be identical — they both have the monstrous 192-core (1 SMX) Kepler GPU. While the GPU is exciting, and we’ll be discussing its ramifications in due course, it is Nvidia’s 64-bit Denver core that we’ll be looking at in this story.

AMD finally launches the Kaveri APU, its most important chip launch in years
It was about time...
This launch has been a long time coming. AMD took the wraps off its Kaveri APU today, officially putting the chip on pre-order — for delivery in the next few weeks — and launching a few benchmark results to demonstrate its performance. We’ve written a great deal about Kaveri in the past, so I’ll mostly recap today. This is AMD’s most important chip launch in years; Kaveri is the first CPU to truly fulfill the Fusion vision AMD sketched out as its justification for buying ATI nearly eight years ago.

Wearable gaming exoskeleton pairs up with Oculus Rift for the ultimate virtual reality experience
Now this is what I've been waiting for...
The buzz behind Oculus Rift and the headset’s next-gen VR capabilities have inspired a host of additional products all aimed at creating a more immersive gaming experience. One of the most aggressive attempts to build a full-body solution for gaming use comes from PrioVR. The company recently yanked a Kickstarter campaign after its attempt to raise $250,000 to finalize the device only garnered $111,000 worth of support, but was on-site at CES 2014 to demonstrate a half-body version of the suit that could be paired with the Oculus VR headset.

As Chromebooks catch on, 2014 promises more models
Laptops based on Google's Chrome OS will reportedly multiply in 2014. They're cheap and schools have a growing affinity for them.
As Chromebooks gain in popularity, device makers are gearing up for new entries in 2014.
Both Asus and Toshiba will enter the market, according to a report last Friday from Digitimes.
That report is backed by plenty of supporting evidence. The Toshiba Chromebook leaked when a review was posted prematurely. And the Asus Chromebook has been rumored for a while now.
And the list of Chromebooks for sale on Amazon is getting longer every month.
Dell will be offering a Chromebook later this month for the first time.
How popular are they? Well, Chromebooks, such as the Acer C270 and Samsung offering, seem to be ensconced almost permanently at the top of Amazon's bestselling laptop list.
And a report from the NPD Group last month showed the Google Chrome-based laptops grabbed about one-fifth of sales in commercial laptop channels -- which the report says is largely shipments to educational institutions -- in a 12-month period, up from virtually nothing the year before.
All of the above is spurring the world's largest PC maker, HP, to put more emphasis on Google's Chrome OS. HP now sells both a 14-inch Chromebook and an 11-inch model.
One reason for their popularity is price. They're typically priced between $200 and $300. In addition, some organizations, like those in education, only need Google services such as Google Docs and Google Drive, according to NPD.

PS4 owners watch three times more porn and have better taste than Xbox One owners
A totally LOL post...
According to SugarDVD, the Netflix of porn, PS4 owners are watching three times as much porn as Xbox One owners. This massive discrepancy isn’t caused by the PS4 outselling the Xbox One, either: The latest figures put the PS4 at 3.4 million units sold, versus 2.4 million for the Xbox One. In short, it really does seem that PS4 owners are much more likely to partake in the porn than those with an Xbone. Furthermore, it seems that each console also has rather different tastes in porn consumption as well: Xbox One owners, you’ll be unsurprised to hear, are connoisseurs of Big Butts, while the PS4 crowd prefer Amateurs.

iOS 7 untethered jailbreak now available to download, without malware
Let the modding begin...
You can now download version 1.0.1 of the Evasi0n jailbreak, for all iPhones, iPads, and iPods running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4. The jailbreak was first released last week to a flurry of intrigue and backroom dealing, with the developers of the Evasi0n jailbreak — Evad3rs — reportedly receiving a “high fix figure” payment from Taig, a piracy-ridden Chinese app store that was included instead of Cydia. This new version of the Evasi0n jailbreak doesn’t include Taig, and seems to be malware-free. In the last few days, the first build of Cydia (version 1.1.9) that’s compatible with iOS 7 has also been released.
